Messari screener filters crypto assets for comparison
Messari screener filters and compares crypto assets using quantitative metrics and qualitative classifications. Selected conditions define the comparison group, while the displayed values describe the assets within it. Basic provides view-only access to the Assets Screener; Enterprise includes filtering in the Assets dataset. Chosen conditions can remain fixed while changing market values alter which assets meet them. The workspace includes library screens and a separate entry for creating a new screen. Messari is now part of Blockworks, with continuity announced for existing accounts and subscriptions during the application transition. Read each comparison with its metric definitions, observation periods and access conditions in view.

Selection, ordering and displayed fields have separate jobs
A screening condition determines which assets belong in a comparison, while an ordering metric determines their relative positions. The ordering metric and sort direction determine what a position near the top means.
Displayed fields provide the detail needed to interpret the group. A sector filter can select the comparison group while the 24-hour volume column shows trading activity within it. Keep both meanings explicit when describing the screen.
Numerical measurements and classifications describe different properties
Messari supports quantitative metrics that express numerical measurements and qualitative classifications that place assets into descriptive groups. Combining them can make a research question more specific without treating a descriptive label as a numerical score.
Quantitative metrics
Messari's asset dataset displays current price, current market capitalization and trading volume, alongside price changes over specified periods. Each measurement describes a different property. Their numerical appearance does not make them interchangeable.
Units identify the quantity
Price expresses an amount per asset unit; market capitalization expresses an aggregate market value, while volume measures trading activity over a period. Compare values within the same field and currency basis. An amount and a percentage require different interpretations.
Periods identify the observation
The dataset distinguishes 24-hour, seven-day and 30-day price changes. A percentage without its period loses part of its meaning, especially when nearby columns describe different intervals.
Qualitative classifications
Classification labels describe attributes such as an asset's sector or network association. They can define a relevant comparison group before numerical metrics distinguish its members. A shared classification supplies context; the assets can still differ substantially in the numerical properties shown beside that label.
Published scope and access parameters
The published screening scope describes the breadth of the comparison tools, while plan terms define access. Coverage counts assets across the stated universe. That count is separate from the number of entries returned by a particular selection or the measurements available for an individual asset.
| Parameter | Published scope or access condition |
|---|---|
| Asset coverage | More than 40 000 assets in the published Screener coverage |
| Metric breadth | Dozens of metrics |
| Metric families | Quantitative and qualitative |
| Basic Assets Screener access | View only |
| Enterprise Assets dataset access | Full access with filtering |
What does basic access allow in the Assets Screener?
Basic provides view-only access to the Assets Screener. The Enterprise Assets dataset includes full access with filtering. Viewing an existing comparison and defining a custom selection therefore involve different access requirements. A task that requires changing filters needs an entitlement that includes filtering, so the presence of asset data alone does not establish permission to customize the comparison.
The workspace distinguishes new screens from existing collections
The Screener workspace presents Create New, Explore Library and My Screens as separate entry points. It also lists Messari Screens organized into groupings that include Categories and Ecosystems. These labels distinguish starting a screen from browsing existing material. Plan conditions continue to govern the features available through those entry points.
An existing collection carries its own subject and selection context. Its title can identify the topic, while its actual criteria determine the comparison. A title alone cannot establish the metric definition, observation period or access rights attached to the displayed view.
Fixed conditions can produce changing asset lists
A numerical screening rule expresses the selection condition, while the measured value describes an asset at the relevant observation time. A threshold therefore belongs to the comparison definition, separately from the value tested against it.
When a changing value crosses a selected boundary, the asset's relationship to that condition changes. The comparison can therefore change without a new research question or a different threshold.
A reproducible description retains the chosen criteria and the measurement context alongside the output. Copying only the asset names removes the conditions that explain their inclusion. Its entries can remain a useful record of that comparison even after the current matching group changes.
Matching observation periods keeps comparisons meaningful
A performance comparison needs the same measurement period across its assets, because changing the interval changes the question. A 24-hour change describes a different interval from a seven-day change, even when both appear as percentages. Comparing the figures as though they share a period mixes different observations. The period belongs with the value whenever the comparison moves into notes, a spreadsheet or another presentation.
Current price and price change also answer different questions. One is a level and the other describes movement over an interval, so an asset can occupy different positions under those measurements.
Trading volume adds an activity measure with its own period. A 24-hour volume figure should retain that interval when compared with another volume figure. The same principle applies to currency units: a comparison needs a common basis before the amounts become directly comparable.
The sign of a price change matters alongside its magnitude and period. A negative change describes a decline over that interval, while a positive change describes an increase. Removing the sign changes the observation.
Asset screens and fundraising screens compare different records
Messari lists the Assets Screener separately from its Deals Screener and Investors Screener. An asset comparison concerns crypto assets and their measured or classified properties. Fundraising data concerns financing activity and the participants in it.
A fundraising record can add context to an asset investigation without becoming a current market measurement. A financing event, an investor identity and an asset's price describe different relationships. Keeping those objects distinct prevents a screen built around one question from appearing to answer another.
How should an empty or incomplete screen be interpreted?
A loaded screen with no matching rows describes an empty selection under its displayed criteria, an outcome limited to that comparison group. It does not establish that Messari's broader asset coverage is empty or that every omitted asset lacks data.
A missing metric leaves that particular measurement unresolved. Substituting zero changes its numerical meaning and can distort the comparison. A numerical zero, an unavailable value and an asset absent from the displayed group describe different states. Keep that distinction when interpreting the output.
Profiles add context to the selected assets
Asset profiles explain the entries that a screen brings into consideration. Basic provides basic profiles, while Enterprise provides full access. A matching row identifies an asset within the comparison; its profile supplies descriptive context that a numerical position alone does not contain.
A watchlist can organize selected assets for continued attention. API access serves a different purpose by making data available to other systems. Neither concept changes the meaning of the screening conditions. The comparison should retain its criteria and measurement periods when its results inform another task.
Account continuity during the Blockworks transition
Messari is part of Blockworks, and the service has announced a move to a new application. The announced transition carries existing Messari accounts and subscriptions over unchanged. That continuity concerns the existing account and subscription; filtering access remains a feature entitlement. The transition notice also says that the earlier website will retire. Blockworks announced that it had acquired Messari on June 12, 2026.
Good to know
-
Does an asset's presence in a screen establish an investor's position size?
- A matching asset row does not establish an investor's current position size. Inclusion describes the screen's selection, while a holding requires information about quantities and ownership. A rank, an asset price or an investor association cannot supply the missing holding amount.
-
What distinguishes a screening rank from Mindshare?
- A screening rank reflects the measurement used to order the comparison, while Mindshare measures social and community attention. Messari's Signals & Mindshare addresses that attention data. An ordering based on market data answers a different question from the amount of discussion surrounding an asset.
-
Are on-demand AI screeners equivalent to Deep Research reports?
- AI-assisted screening concerns asset selection and comparison, while Deep Research produces structured reports. Messari's Deep Research templates cover tasks such as diligence, ecosystem reviews and risk analysis. Those report templates organize an explanation of a subject beyond the asset measurements used for screening.
-
Where can missing Screener data be reported?
- The Screener includes a Contact Form for missing data and questions. A useful report identifies the affected asset and metric, then distinguishes an unavailable value from an unexpected value. This gives the question a specific subject without treating a blank cell as a numerical zero.
-
Is a price filter a substitute for token unlock tracking?
- A price filter does not describe a token's vesting schedule. Messari's Token Unlocks covers vesting schedules and cliff events, adding scheduled supply context to an asset comparison. The schedule concerns release timing; a price condition concerns the market measurement selected for the screen.
